Member of Parliament Jay Aspin (Nipissing—Timiskaming), on behalf of the Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor), highlighted today a Harper Government investment that will benefit Northern Ontario’s official language minority communities (OLMCs).

A FedNor investment of $27,500 provided to the Association française des municipalités de l’Ontario (AFMO) in 2013 enabled the organization to hire a youth intern for a one-year period.

Working as a Community Liaison Officer, the intern successfully completed a variety of activities to enhance economic growth in OLMCs such as updating AFMO’s website and increasing its online presence, coordinating outreach events, leading special projects, and supporting the development of a strategic plan for the organization’s annual municipal conference.

Quick Facts

  • The Association française des municipalités de l’Ontario is a membership organization that provides advocacy and support services to French-speaking elected municipal officials in 34 municipalities throughout the province, including 22 in Northern Ontario.
  • The Harper Government investment in support of the youth internship was provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
  • FedNor has helped more than 1450 young graduates obtain that crucial first job experience in Northern Ontario, while providing countless local organizations with access to a qualified and talented workforce.

“Youth out-migration is a serious issue facing our region and I am proud that our Government is investing to create meaningful employment for young Canadians, while strengthening Northern Ontario’s economy. This project supports efforts by the region’s francophone communities to develop economic and business growth opportunities and create jobs,” said Jay Aspin, Member of Parliament for Nipissing–Timiskaming.

“The FedNor funding supported an exciting employment opportunity for a young graduate and assisted us deliver priority projects that are helping strengthen the economic outlook and create new opportunities for people living and working in Official Language Minority Communities. We are proud of our partnership with FedNor and the Government of Canada on this important initiative,” said Jacqueline Noiseux, Director General, AFMO.
