Northern College’s Board of Governors is pleased to announce that Fred Gibbons has been appointed for a third term as president and CEO of Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology. This decision comes following a meeting of the college’s Board of Governors on June 13, 2017, in Timmins.

In January 2009, Gibbons was appointed interim-president, succeeding retiring President Michael Hill. Following a national search for its next president, the Board of Governors appointed Gibbons to his current role on July 1, 2009.

Since then, Gibbons has been instrumental in positioning Northern as a college of choice for students, industry and community partners.

He spearheaded various initiatives to improve and expand campus facilities and has forged partnerships that have moved the college forward while benefiting communities within the college’s catchment area. Gibbons has worked with the college in various capacities for nearly 25 years.

First contracted in 1992 to develop curriculum and to teach, Gibbons has carried out the roles of Registrar and Director of Student Services, Executive Director College Development and Registrar, Principal of the Haileybury School of Mines, as well as Executive Regional Director.

“I am very pleased that our president and CEO, Fred Gibbons has accepted our offer to renew his contract for another five-year term,” said George Kemp, chair of the Northern College Board of Governors.

“Going forward, colleges will be facing sustainability challenges precipitated by declining demographics and other fiscal pressures, especially northern and rural colleges. We know that Fred will provide Northern College with the leadership to meet those challenges.”

“I am very honoured and privileged to receive the continuing support of our Board of Governors,” said Gibbons. “I am equally privileged to work with an exceptionally talented group of staff at each of our four campuses, who on a daily basis, work to assist our students and our communities to achieve success.”

President Gibbons’ renewed appointment is for a five-year term, effective July 1, 2017.
