A north shore mine developer has selected the person to steer its palladium deposit toward production.

Generation Mining of Toronto has appointed Drew Anwyll as its chief operating officer.

His job will be to start and oversee the execution of a definitive feasibility study this year and restart the permitting for the company's Marathon Palladium Project, outside the community of Marathon.

A feasibility study is the final leg in a sequence of events to evaluate whether a proposed mining project can be economically mined.

The feasibility stage is the most detailed and definitive report that determines whether to proceed with the project.

Gen Mining's 22,000-hectare land package, about 10 kilometres from town, has been a heavily explored area over the years and the subject of many aborted production attempts by other companies.

In January, a preliminary economic assessment placed a 14-year mine life on the Marathon Palladium and Copper Project, which the company lauds as the North America’s largest undeveloped platinum group metal (PGM) mineral resource.

The first-glance estimate is that the project could produce an average of 194,000 palladium equivalent ounces over that span.

According to a March 18 news release, Anwyll has a strong technical background in both open pit and underground operations and has played a pivotal part in starting up, commissioning and operating a number of mines.

He's a professional mining engineer who's worked with Detour Gold, Barrick Gold, Placer Dome along with a slew of junior and mid-tier miners across Canada and internationally.

HIs most recent stop was as senior vice-president of technical services at Detour Gold's open pit mine, north of Cochrane.

He saw the project through from the construction phase to its recent acquisition by Kirkland Lake Gold in early 2020.

“The addition of Drew to our operating team fills a critical position at an important time in Generation Mining’s drive towards production at our Marathon Palladium project,” said Gen Mining president-CEO Jamie Levy.

“Drew’s credentials are an indication of the quality of our project.”

Generation Mining also holds molybdenum and gold properties in British Columbia, zinc properties in Alberta and Nova Scotia, with a base metal exploration play on the Arctic coast.
