Indulge in a treat and support a local charity with a sweet new initiative.

Fritter Friday is launching March 6 and will see handmade apple fritters sold at three locations, with the proceeds going to the Anti-Hunger Coalition Timmins (ACT).

The fritters will feature Ontario-grown apples and are being made by the Countryside Market in Val Gagne. They are $2 each, $10 for six, or $20 for 12 and available at the Timmins Museum: National Exhibition Centre, Lemongrass, and the Urban Farm starting at 10 a.m. Friday.

The fundraiser took shape when the Countryside Market reached out to Steve Morin of the Urban Farm in South Porcupine.

The Val Gagne market is a supplier for the South Porcupine shop and offered a good sale for apple fritters. Morin used it as a chance to help out the local charity.

He said there will be about 100 dozen treats for Fritter Fridays, and expects it to run for at least two weeks.

“They have about five or six people hand making these all day, and then we will have them here for Friday ready to sell,” he said.

ACT program co-ordinator Amber McLaughlin said the initiative is a great for their organization, as well as local farmers.

"Because these apples are Ontario local, so it’s great to share that connection with the community as well as our farmers to help promote them,” she said.

Proceeds of Fritter Friday will be used for ACT's community food programs.
