Former bar, theatre up for tax sale

The property at 33 Cedar St. S. is up for tax sale. It housed the Victory Theatre for decades before turning into the Amigos nightclub in the '90s.

It's been a movie theatre, bar and restaurant. Now a historic building is up for tax sale. 

Bids on the building at 33 Cedar St. S. are being accepted at Service Timmins in city hall until Tuesday, Oct. 18 at 3 p.m. The bids will be opened at 3:15 p.m., according to the City of Timmins tax sale notice. 

Built in the 1940s, the building housed the Victory Theatre until the early '90s, a generation of people were entertained after it was turned into the Amigos nightclub and most recently it was Cheapsters restaurant.

The value of the property, according to the last assessment, is $415,000. The minimum bid for the property is $239,698.32.

Tenders must be submitted with a deposit of at least 20 per cent of the tender amount. The full rules for people interested in making a bid are available here. A map of the area is here.

Recently, work has been ongoing to create a Municipal Heritage Register and protect historic properties. 

There is no historic designation for the former Victory Theatre. The municipal heritage committee, however, has identified it as a site of possible cultural heritage value or interest.
