A forest fire that started yesterday west of Timmins is still not under control.

The evening of May 31, the fire Timmins 6 started about in the Malette Road area and is currently 8.5 hectares. It's 13 kilometres west of Timmins and five kilometres north of Highway 101, says Aviation, Forest Fire and Emergency Services (AFFES).

There are five FireRanger crews and one wildland fire engine working to suppress it.

"Waterbomber support worked on the fire until late evening last night, and we’re expecting a helicopter to do aerial fire suppression today," says AFFES.

Due to the extreme forest fire hazard, a restricted fire zone is in effect for the northeast region. The Ministry of Natural Resorces declaration went into effect Thursday, June 1 at 12:01 a.m.

Yesterday, a fire ban was also issued by the City of Timmins
