Children forced from their homes because of forest fires received a special delivery in Timmins.

Today, Timmins Police Service members stopped by the Ramada Inn, where evacuees from Pikangikum First Nation are being housed, to donate plush toys.

"Being removed from home due to a forest fire can be a traumatic experience," reads the Timmins Police news release.

"A plush toy can sometimes provide a level of comfort and support to younger displaced persons.

"Thanks to a benefactor, Theresa Turmel of the Ontario Indian Residential School Support Services, this generous gift of plush toys was completed today."

Forest fires continue to burn in northwestern Ontario.

As of yesterday afternoon, there were 109 active fires. Of those, 17 were not under control, four were being held, 14 were under control and 74 fires were being monitored.

In the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry update yesterday, officials said an increase in new fires is expected "as a result of recent lightning activity as well as fire intensity on existing fires as a drying trend continues over the next few days."
