Flags at City of Timmins establishments are flying at half-mast, honouring the memory of former Fire Chief Albert Schaffer, who sadly passed away yesterday.
“We’d like to offer our sincere condolences to Albert’s family,” said Mayor Steve Black. “This is a man who dedicated his career to protecting the well-being of our citizens, and for that, we are forever grateful.”
Albert was hired May 1960 as a Firefighter and promoted to Lieutenant in 1974.
He was then promoted to Captain in December of 1977, became Deputy Fire Chief in January 1981, and served as Fire Chief from July 1985 until his retirement in February of 1996. He celebrated his 80th birthday in February.
“Chief Schaffer was an extraordinary individual who had great pride in the Fire Department and the entire community during his 36-year career – a pride which continued throughout his 20 years of retirement,” said current Fire Chief Mike Pintar. “He will be sadly missed by everyone who had the pleasure of knowing him.”
