NEWS RELEASE

CITY OF TIMMINS

The flags at City of Timmins facilities will fly at half-mast tomorrow to honour the National Day of Mourning.

The National Day of Mourning is not only a day to remember and honour those who have lost their lives or been injured, but also a day to renew our commitment to improve health and safety to prevent any further workplace tragedies.

“It is so important to recognize the National Day of Mourning, but we also need to keep this at the forefront of our minds on a daily basis,” said Mayor Steve Black. “Health and safety in the workplace should be everyone’s number one priority.”

A ceremony will be hosted at the Miners Memorial at 11 a.m., hosted by the Timmins & District Labour Council. If you cannot make it out to the ceremony, we encourage you to take a moment of silence at 11 a.m. to think of all those directly affected by these workplace tragedies.

“We have rights to identify and recommend solutions to workplace health and safety issues,” said President of the Timmins & District Labour Council J.P. Desilets. “Give us the tools, provide us effective training standards, robust enforcement and provide adequate resources so we can do our part to prevent workplace tragedies.”

Ontario Ministry of Labour (https://www.labour.gov.on.ca/english/hs/topics/april28.php):

“Every year on Apr. 28 we pay our respects to, and remember, the thousands of workers who have been killed, injured or suffered illness as a result of work-related incidents. We also honour the many families and friends who have been deeply affected by these tragedies. Every worker has the right to return home safe and sound at the end of each work day. By working together – with employers, workers and our health and safety partners – we can prevent worker injuries and deaths before they occur.”
