Timmins held its annual Relay for Life event on Friday, June 12.

With ten teams taking part and 50 survivors present, the evening went on successfully until midnight at O’Gorman High School.

The Relay for Life is a Canada wide event to raise funds for cancer research in hopes of one day finding a cure to end cancers.

Teams are created and collect donations until the night of the Relay.

There were speeches from Mayor Steve Black, MPP Gilles Bisson and survivors of cancer.

The event featured an activity tent where participants could take part in a scavenger hunt, as well as shave their heads for cancer; live entertainment with performances by local artists, a survivor walk followed by teams walking around the track in memory of loved ones.

There were also luminaries available for purchase and other items including a cookbook with proceeds going to the Cancer Society.

Luminaries were lit at 10 p.m. with a ceremony.

The event was sponsored by The Goldcorp Porcupine Gold Mines.

Several members of the Rotary Club of Timmins – Porcupine were on site providing refreshments and taking part in the Relay.

Rotary Club of Timmins-Porcupine takes part in many events around town including the Rotary Rib Fest which is an annual summer event.

The Porcupine Photo Club had several members in attendance providing free photography services to the teams, and survivors with a full studio like set up in the gym.

The photographers who volunteered their services also were outside taking part in the event.

The Porcupine Photo Club also takes part in many of the events around Timmins, including Mud Factor, Relay for Life, and their own event Portraits for Families, to name a few.

If you would like to register a team for next year, please contact the Canadian Cancer Society Timmins Branch at (705) 264-7434 or visit them at 273 3rd Avenue in Timmins.
