The Wintergreen Fund for Conservation is happy to be offering a Fall  Hiking Day once again this year. The last guided hiking day was held in February 2020, and has  been on hold due to COVID-19 since then.

Local trails have been well-used over the past two years, and now that activities are being permitted again, the local group would like to be able to share their knowledge of the area with newcomers and seasoned trail users alike. The Wintergreen Fund for Conservation and  Mattagami Region Conservation Authority (MRCA) have been hosting a Fall Hiking Day for many years to give residents the opportunity to get out in nature, meet new people, see new areas, and learn about our local ecology.

Wintergreen’s Fall Hiking Day will take place on Sunday, Oct. 17, 2021 at the Hersey Lake  Conservation Area. This year, in order to accommodate physical distancing, a variety of different hikes are being offered to keep groups smaller. Participants are welcome to join a local bird enthusiast to learn about, and hopefully spot, some of our local feathered friends. A certified forest therapy guide will be hosting a Forest Bathing hike, introducing participants to a more meditative approach of nature enjoyment. Wintergreen members with knowledge of tree identification, local ecology and history will also be guiding additional groups. Anyone  interested in participating in Hiking Day this year is asked to register by contacting the  Mattagami Region Conservation Authority office at 705-360-2660 or by emailing  [email protected]. Hikes will be limited to a maximum number of participants.

The Wintergreen Fund for Conservation and the MRCA have worked in partnership for over 20  years in ensuring the community has a first-class trail network accessible to residents across the  City of Timmins. The Wintergreen Fund for Conservation is a local non-profit foundation made  up of local citizens interested in conservation, the protection of the environment and supporting the recreational trail network. Their focus is on the importance of having a clean and healthy  environment within which to work and play. If you would like to support the trails program with a donation, visit: www.mattagamiregion.ca/donate-now.

The MRCA is a community-based environmental protection agency that has been actively involved in the management and protection of our watershed resources for over 50 years. Their  vision is to have a healthy, safe and sustainable environment.
