On August 29th 2013, the Timmins Police Service received a complaint from a local resident after it was revealed that she had purchased two fake Apple iPhone 5’s. Officers were advised that a local citizen purchased the new phones from another resident that were later determined to be fake. After purchasing each phone for $175, the complainant attended a local mobile franchise where she was advised that the phones could not be activated as they were replicas of authentic Apple products.

The items are well designed replicas that can easily be mistaken for a legitimate Apple product. The phone is made of different materials however, has full functioning applications that run with poor quality. When looked at closely, avid iPhone users will have an easier time determining that each application logo is not similar to that of an Apple product therefore police are advising new iPhone users to be wary.

Police are reminding citizens that it is important to verify second hand cellular products with their mobile provider prior to investing in them. When a deal seems to be good to be true, it is important to raise suspicions. Mobile companies are able to determine the validity of the phone through serial numbers and will advise if the product may be used.
