Renovation boosts patient access for the Moosonee community

In the coming days, Northerners  living in the James and Hudson Bay coastal community of Moosonee will have access to a beautiful newly renovated clinic – the Moosonee site of the Weeneebayko Area Health Authority (WAHA).

The original building was lost to a fire in 2012 and since then people have been receiving care from a temporary clinic set up in the town’s curling club.

With the renovation complete, medical services for emergent and urgent walk-in care will be moved back to the Health Centre as of 12 noon on Friday, July 17, 2015.

Full services will resume at the Moosonee Health Centre, 5 Percy’s Way, on Tuesday, July 21, which will allow time to move the non-essential items, prepare the clinical rooms, and ensure staff have readjusted to the space.

“This is a very exciting time for the Moosonee and WAHA community and we are very grateful for the dedication of the Moosonee staff and patients who have persevered with the less than ideal working conditions over the past 2 ½ years,” said Deb Hill, VP of Patient Care & Chief Nursing Executive, WAHA.

“The North East Local Health Integration Network (NE LHIN) joins in the community celebration of the renovated clinic where people can access the care they need in a quiet, stand-alone setting,” said Kate Fyfe, Acting CEO of the North East LHIN. “Patient privacy will be enhanced with the return to the single rooms in the clinic, as opposed to the tents which were being used as temporary rooms in the curling rink.”

Facts:

  • An open house was held at the Moosonee Health Centre on July 15, 2015 at 5 Percy’s Way, Moosonee between 11 a.m. and 3 p.m.
  • WAHA will mark its five year anniversary this October, further to the integration of the provincial James Bay General Hospital and the federal Weeneebayko General Hospital.
  • Every year, the NE LHIN provides more than $27 million in funding to deliver health care to people living in coastal communities, including hospital services, community support services, mental health and addictions, diabetes education, ehealth investments, and more.
