Drivers could be slowing down sooner heading into South Porcupine

90% of drivers going into the community near Legion Drive are speeding, according to a city report

A speed limit change could be on the way for drivers heading east into South Porcupine.

At tonight's council meeting, there's a recommendation to change where the speed limit drops on Highway 101 in the Bruce wye area.

The proposal on the table is to lower the speed limit to 70 km/h before the wye and drop it to 50 km/h at Porcupine Creek.

Right now, the eastbound speed limit is 80 km/h until just after the Bruce Avenue wye when drops to 70 km/h from 80 km/h. Shortly after it drops again to 50 km/h just before The Beer Store.

The Timmins Police Services Board has talked about the problem area in 2020. At that time, members suggested the change now being recommended.

Recently there has also been a radar showing drivers how fast they are going on the curve before Legion Drive.

About 90 per cent of vehicles entering the community near Legion Drive are speeding, according to the city report.

"By reducing speed limits earlier, and installing our new radar sign, we believe traffic speeds will be reduced prior to entering the residential area in South Porcupine," reads the report.

Lowering the speed limit, says the city, would also increase public safety for the residences in Finn Town along Highway 101 East.

If the change is approved, the city report says all of the materials are in stock and the only cost is the labour to install signs.

No decisions have been made on the item. The full report is available here.
