Driver facing charges following hit and run

Following an investigation by TPS’ Traffic Services Section, Nicholas Jonker has received five charges in relation to pedestrian collision

On February 1, 2016, at approximately 5:25 p.m., a pedestrian crossing at Pine Street South and Kirby Avenue was struck by a vehicle turning westbound onto Kirby Avenue.

The driver of the vehicle fled the scene, however was located a short time later by Timmins Police officers.

The pedestrian, a 31-year-old Timmins woman, attended the hospital to receive treatment for her minor injuries.

Following an investigation by the TPS’ Traffic Services Section, Nicholas Jonker, 19, of Timmins was charged with:

  • Fail to stop at the scene of an accident (Sec. 252, Criminal Code of Canada)

  • No clear view to front (Sec. 74(1)(a), Highway Traffic Act)

  • Careless driving (Sec. 130, Highway Traffic Act)

  • Fail to render assistance (Sec. 200(1)(b), Highway Traffic Act)

  • Fail to notify change of address (Sec. 33(1), Highway Traffic Act)

He was released on a Promise to Appear in court & an Undertaking to Appear in court.

The Timmins Police Service is reminding all drivers to be vigilant when approaching and proceeding through intersections, especially during winter months or in inclement weather.

Ensure that all windows are properly cleared of ice and snow before proceeding to your destination, and take extra time to ensure that intersections are clear of pedestrians before proceeding.

The Timmins Police Service remains committed to the safety and security of all who use the City’s streets and will continue to educate the public and enforce any driving behaviours that put other motorists or pedestrians in danger.
