Driver charged with vehicle theft and fleeing police

HEARST - On Apr. 16, 2017, at approximately 3 a.m., Hearst officers of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) conducted a traffic stop on Front Street in the Town of Hearst. As officers approached the motor vehicle, the driver fled from police.

Police investigation revealed that the motor vehicle had been stolen.

William Wapachee, 21, of Hearst, Ont. was arrested and charged with the following offences:
    •    Theft over $5,000 of a motor Vvehicle contrary to section 334(a) of the Criminal Code of Canada (CC)
    •    Flight while pursued by peace officer contrary to section 249.1(1) CC
    •    Race a motor vehicle - stunt contrary to section 172(1) of the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario (HTA)

The accused's licence has been suspended for seven days and he is scheduled to appear at the Ontario Court of Justice in Hearst on June 7, 2017 to answer to the charges.

The motor vehicle has been returned to the owner.
