The Timmins Police Service – Traffic Section engaged in a two-day distracted driving enforcement initiative last week in the city of Timmins.

Traffic statistics make the obvious point that distracted driving is a public safety issue that results in a significant number of preventable collisions resulting in personal injury and death.

Simply put, collisions linked to distracted driving outnumber collisions linked to impaired driving.

Over the two day enforcement initiative, Timmins Police officers monitored local traffic at high volume intersections.

Numerous violations were noted by Timmins Police officers and a total of 12 drivers were charged under the applicable section of the Highway Traffic Act referencing the use of a handheld device while driving.

The charged persons incur monetary fines and demerit points on their driver’s licences.

All drivers found to be in violation of the applicable section of the Highway Traffic Act were greeted sternly but professionally at the roadside by Timmins Police officers.

Going forward, the Timmins Police Service reminds all local motorists of their legal and moral obligation to give the task of driving all the attention it requires.

It must become a priority for drivers to reach their destination safely by ignoring the dangerous distraction posed by using handheld communication devices while driving.
