Timmins Police Service Deputy Chief Des Walsh received a high honour on Tuesday, September 9 in Ottawa as he accepted the Order of Merit of the Police Forces from Canada’s Governor General.

The Order of Merit of the Police Forces was established as a way to “recognize conspicuous merit and exceptional service by the members of the police forces”.

It confers no special privileges on its members and bring them no monetary rewards.

It is a society of honour with three degrees of recognition: Commander, Officer and Member.

Appointments are made by the Governor General on the recommendation of the commissioner of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police.

An advisory committee has the task of assessing the relative merits of persons who are nominated for the Order, and recommending to the commissioner the names of those considered especially worthy of appointment.

“I am deeply honored to have been chosen for investiture into the Order of Merit of the Police Forces,” said Deputy Chief Walsh. “I attribute the bestowment of this privilege to the unwavering support of my cherished colleagues, family, and friends.”

Following their initial appointment, Officers and Members are eligible for elevation within the Order at some future time, in recognition of further achievement.

The Timmins Police Service congratulates Deputy Chief Des Walsh on receiving this honour.
