For our 10th issue of People of Timmins, we interviewed Cheryl Viau, a local food service worker who was recently recognized by the Timmins Chamber of Commerce for her excellence in customer service. Some may remember the heart-warming video posted on Facebook by the chamber that went semi-viral in 2016.
Q: Some people might remember you from having received a customer service award from the Timmins Chamber of Commerce a few years ago. Have you always been an upbeat people-person?
A: Yes I have. It never hurts to smile. What you give you get back.
Q: Who in your life do you think helped shape you the most into who you are today? Any particular role models growing up?
A: My father, he was very loving and always trying to help anyone who needed it. He was a paramedic and people would call him up and he would drive them to the hospital. He was always willing to help.
Q: Who do you try and be a role model for now (if anyone)?
A: My two grandaughters.
Q: You deal with people all day long. When you get home after a long day of work, do you surround yourself with people or do you need some alone time?
A: When I get home I love to be with my husband. You know how they say women marry men like their fathers? Well, that's what happened with me. My husband is a lot like my dad, always smiling, always willing to help.
Q: If you've had a bad day, what's the one thing you know will always put a smile back on your face?
A: My hubby has a fantastic sense of humor. We've been married for more than 30 years and he still makes me smile every day.
Q: What are some of your favourite things to do for fun?
A: Sit by a fire or read a good book.
Q: Do you have goals or plans for activities/hobbies you want to take up in the future?
A: Read more books and maybe travel a little.
Q: OK, time for a few fun, rapid-fire questions. It you could design a Cheryl Viau emoji, what would it look like?
A: A big smile.
Q: If you could be any animal, what would you be and why?
A: A dog because they are so loyal and always make you smile.
Q: If you could go on a free week long trip anywhere in the world, where would you go?
A: Hawaii.
