Crews at scene of forest fire on Highway 655: police (UPDATED)

Timmins emergency crews are at the scene of a fire on Highway 655.

According to South Porcupine OPP on Twitter, there is a "small fire" along the treeline of Highway 655 in Kidd Township. 

Police say to expect delays. According to 511, Highway 655 is closed in both directions from Timmins to Driftwood due to the fire.

The Ontario Forest Fire map notes a fire on Highway 655 — Timmins 2 — that was reported today (May 21) at 6:20 p.m. It is listed as not under control at three hectares.

Bigwater Campground, which is located off Highway 655, put up a notice on its Facebook page advising people about the fire. It notes that it is past their property and closer to the mine site. 

"If you are not here maybe its a good idea to stay home today. If you are here at the moment be prepared to evacuate," reads the post.

In the northeast region, an update today from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Forestry notes five new fires were discovered by mid-afternoon.

Three are in Sudbury, one in Sault Ste. Marie, and one in Pembroke. None are under control.

There are five other active fires in the region. One is in Sudbury and under control, three are in the North Bay area, with one being observed, one under control, and one not under control. The other fire is in Bancroft and under control.

"The fire hazard is currently high across most of the northeast," reads the MNRF update. "The areas of Greater Sudbury, Elliot Lake and Temiskaming Shores are showing an extreme hazard today."
