A COVID-19 outbreak has been declared at Kirkland Lake Gold's Macassa Mine.

There have been four confirmed cases at the mine, according to the Timiskaming Health Unit.

“Everyone involved in this investigation has provided valuable support,” said Dr. Glenn Corneil, acting medical officer of health, in a news release. “COVID-19 can appear quickly in an area at any given time and everyone needs to remain vigilant in order to ensure we do everything we can to reduce the spread.”

The outbreak is under investigation.

According to the health unit, it has been working with Kirkland Lake Gold representatives to make sure the necessary contact tracing is done.

"Kirkland Lake Gold is taking all necessary precautions to reduce the risk of infection and prevent the transmission of COVID19. Contact tracing is underway and those who have been identified as close contacts have been, or are in the process of being notified," reads the news release.

The health unit reported three new cases of the virus in the region today — two in the Kirkland Lake area and one in the southern part of the region, which includes Temiskaming Shores and Temagami.

To date, there have been 98 confirmed cases of the virus in the Timiskaming region. Of those, 92 are resolved and one person has died. There are five known active cases.
