COVID-19: Here's the situation in Timmins and area today

So far today, 27 new cases of COVID-19 have been reported in the Porcupine Health Unit region.

Nineteen of the new cases are in Timmins, seven are in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls, Smooth Rock Falls, and one is in the Hearst, Hornepayne area.

This week there has been a surge of cases in the region, with 68 new cases being confirmed since Monday. Twenty-three previously reported cases have also screened positive for a variant of concern. The health unit expects they are all the UK (B.1.1.7) strain. 

To date, there have been 475 confirmed cases of the virus in the region since the start of the pandemic. Of those, 366 are recovered and 25 people have died. There are 84 known active cases.

Today, a record 4,812 cases of COVID-19 were reported by Public Health Ontario. Since the start of the pandemic, there have been 408,383. Of those, there have been  360,742 recoveries and 7,664 deaths.

In the Porcupine Health Unit region, three outbreaks were declared this week. The outbreaks are at Iroquois Falls Secondary School, St. Anne English Catholic School in Iroquois Falls, and Glencore's Kidd Mine in Timmins.

There is also an ongoing outbreak among Black River-Matheson staff. Changes to their services due to the emergency are available here.

Although the Ontario government has directed hospitals in COVID-19 case hotspots across the province to reduce elective surgeries and other non-urgent medical procedures, officials assured locally, those will continue. More details are available here.
