Timmins council will be talking about updating its zoning bylaw for marijuana production facilities, the Connecting Link and more tonight.

The meeting starts at 6 p.m. in council chambers at city hall.

Here are some highlights of the agenda:

Timmins is working on updating its bylaws when it comes to cannabis production and processing. While the city's official plan has policies to support the facilities, the zoning bylaw "does not have any policies or provisions dealing with cannabis production  and processing."  According to the report, there have been three inquiries about where marijuana production facilities can be put up in the city. Lessard-Stephens and Miron Wilson funeral homes are looking to partner on a crematorium in the city. Council is being asked to declare part of the Timmins Memorial Cemetery property as surplus to sell to Elmwood Crematorium to build and operate a crematorium.

Staff is recommending that Miller Paving be awarded the next phase of the Connecting Link project on Highway 101. The $4.2 million project is to reconstruct 1.3 kilometres of the road starting just east of Goldale Street. "The contract is the full reconstruction including pulverizing, paving, guiderails and lights," reads the report. The agenda also includes a recommendation to approve awarding AECOM Canada a $207,120 contract administration bid for the project.

Public works is looking to formalize what sidewalks are closed and not maintained during the winter. According to the staff report, the city has 177 kilometres of sidewalks, and in the winter the department is only able to maintain about two-thirds of it. "Passing a bylaw that closes the current unmaintained sidewalk during the winter season eliminates the immediate risk to the corporation, and allows Public Works and Engineering to budget and plan for a sidewalk needs study. There would be some costs involved in advertising and the possible need for signage," reads the report.
