Seniors will now be paying less for parking in the downtown core.

This week, city council unanimously approved a discounted parking rate of $10 monthly for use of the ONR and Timmins Public Library parking lots.

The HR Bielek building, which houses the Timmins Senior Citizens Recreation Centre, is located on nearby Third Avenue. Parking spaces in the general vicinity are severely limited.

"In order to address the Downtown parking situation, council believes that providing a discounted monthly parking pass for the library and ONR parking lot will be helpful," read city clerk Steph Palmateer at Monday's meeting.

Those wishing to receive the discounted rate will have to provide proof of their membership when purchasing their monthly pass.

"This was actually brought forward by one of the members of the centre, so I want to thank her for bringing the matter to my attention, so that it could be brought back to council. I think its a great step forward in trying to encourage our senior community to maintain their active participation in the centre, and get out and enjoy as much as they can in an affordable manner," said Mayor Steve Black.
