Community BBQ held by two francophone organizations

La Ronde and Centre de santé present new programming

Centre Culturel La Ronde and Centre de santé communautaire de Timmins have teamed up to host a first community BBQ Monday.

Over 30 people have attended the event held at the old St-Charles School on Kent Avenue.

“We were able to launch our programs to the community and this is a great partnership to do that for the first time, so that’s really exciting,” said the French primary care clinic’s community development co-ordinator Lisa Prevost.

In addition to offering primary care services out of the clinic at the Timmins Square, the non-profit organization also provides community health services.

For the month of August, Centre de santé is offering a walking club that will meet at Gillies Lake every Wednesday and Friday, and a social club on Aug. 13 and Aug 20.

The organization will also be hosting a SafeTalk training to hep community members recognize people who have suicidal thoughts and connect them to help and resources. The event will take place on Aug. 27.

La Ronde’s executive director Lisa Bertrand and communications and marketing intern Camille Lucas also unveiled their new programming, set to launch next year.

"We're hoping it's going to be back to normal but we don't know, so we may have to repush again to next year or modify," Bertrand said. "But we wanted to show what we have in stock. There might be changes, that's why we waited till January."

The programing is expected to kick off at the end of January with workshops from a non-profit group Prima Danse. Participants will be able to rehearse with professional dancers and then present what they’ve learned at a show.

For the next planned event, which will be an international night featuring Kelly Bado, La Ronde has partnered with Collège Boréal. The event is expected to take place on Feb. 3.

The annual Bonhomme Carnaval will include three events: a ball hockey tournament at Full Beard Brewing with a concert from Claude and Simon, a show by a musical artist Bill Bestiole and a Soirée du bon vieux temps which will be held at Cedar Meadows.

For March, the organization has invited Les Chiclettes and King Melrose, and is planning to bring back a wine and food pairing event.

In April, La Ronde will present a Vaches musical by Créations in Vivo and a Tassés Comme des Sardines comedy by Les Maringouins. In May, there will be Nicola Ciccone’s concert and a fundraising comedy fest featuring four different artists.

The organization is also planning to present shows featuring a musical artist Shauit, DJ Unpier, Madame Diva and King Melrose to students at elementary and high schools in Timmins, Gogama, Iroquois Falls and Foleyet.

"We're super proud of this programming. It's a fresh new look for us," Bertrand told TimminsToday.

Events will be open for anyone to attend.

“We want to create a lot of different partnerships," Bertrand said. “It’s for our members but we do invite all cultures, the whole community, to come out and see these shows.”
