(SOUTH PORCUPINE) – In keeping with its commitment to enhancing roadway safety, the South Porcupine OPP is in the midst of identifying vehicles which may be in need of further mechanical scrutiny.

Working in conjunction with the MTO, and the Mechanical Apprenticeship Program at Northern College of Applied Arts and Technology (Porcupine Campus), those vehicles whose appearance gives rise to suspicion as to their mechanical fitness, will be subjected to a thorough inspection on November 18th at Northern College.

So far the owners of five such vehicles have been served with notices requiring them to attend the mechanical apprenticeship area of Northern College to submit their vehicle to the mechanical fitness inspection by MTO Vehicle Inspectors.

OPP officers are patrolling the area in an effort to locate other such vehicles.

According to South Porcupine OPP Detachment Commander, Staff/Sgt Brent Cecchini

“These inspections are part of the South Porcupine OPP’s commitment to roadway safety.  The OPP is and remains fiercely committed to engaging in productive partnerships with the MTO and Northern College to reach a common goal of enhancing the level of roadway safety we all enjoy as motorists in this area.  A vehicle whose mechanical fitness level is below the acceptable threshold is a threat to the safety of all persons on the roadway.

The OPP will continue to diligently monitor area roadways to locate motorists who persist in using unsafe driving practices such as but not limited to speeding, impaired driving, unsafe passing, and tailgating.

The second component that leads to enhanced roadway safety is the continued identification of vehicles whose mechanical fitness level is sub standard.   Any owner who operates a vehicle, having allowed his or her vehicle to fall into a state of disrepair, can expect a prompt and professional response from the OPP.”
