Ivanhoe Provincial Park Update:

Timmins, ON -  City Council decided to not participate in the second year of a two-year pilot project for the management and operation of the Ivanhoe Lake Provincial Park. The reason for this being that the financial liability was too great.

At this Council meeting, it was decided to request the Ministry of Natural Resources (MNR) to consider an extension to the decision date for participating in the second year of this pilot project. The purpose of the extension is to provide more time for campers to purchase seasonal lots for 2014. At the present time, the park has 19 seasonal lots available for 2014.

The City is Timmins is pleased to announce that the Ministry has agreed to an extension until March 15, 2014. In addition, the MNR has agreed to begin discussions regarding the future of the park for 2014 and beyond.

The Ministry, the Ivanhoe Park Working Group and the City worked collaboratively during the 2013 camping season to explore ideas to reduce expenditures and increased revenues and visitation.

Mayor Laughren stated, “I am extremely pleased with the excellent working relationship and partnership the City of Timmins has developed with the MNR. Campers need to be assured that there is a future for the Ivanhoe Lake Provincial Park. The City has worked with the Ministry in developing a model which provides more sustainability for the park.”

These decisions will have to continue to be made in order to keep finances in check and minimize expense to the tax payer.
