A buildup of ice could cause vibrations which may lead to lug nuts loosening and falling off

OPP are telling motorists to check the safety of their motor vehicles throughout the winter months.

"Following several occurrences of wheels separating from vehicles and lug nuts detaching, police are encouraging drivers to remove ice and snow from the inside of their wheels. A buildup of ice could cause vibrations which may lead to lug nuts loosening and falling off," says an OPP news release.

Should a wheel come off of a motor vehicle, drivers may be charged under the Highway Traffic Act of Ontario or be sent to the Provincial Offences Court.
