OTTAWA - Three veteran municipal politicians are stepping down in the north and Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus stood in the House Monday to thank them for their service.
Timmins Mayor Tom Laughren, Kirkland Lake Mayor Bill Enouy and Iroquois Falls Mayor Gilles Forget have announced that they will not be running again.
Angus has worked closely with these leaders and says they were widely respected across the province.
“Tom Laughren has been a real leader for our region. He has always put the people of Timmins and the people of the north ahead of any personal or partisan interests.”
Angus says he will miss working with Bill Enouy, who was always frank and honest about what needed to be done to improve the region.
“Bill Enouy has been a dedicated fighter for Kirkland Lake. With Bill you always know where he stands on the issues. Kirkland Lake is a better place today because of him.”
Angus says Forget has worked hard to keep Iroquois Falls on an even keel despite the huge drop in the pulp and paper market.
“Gilles Forget has served his community with dedication. I thank him for his service and wish all the best to all who are looking to run in the municipal elections.The great thing about living in the north is that before any title or affiliation we may be given we are all northerners first and foremost. These men are proud northerners.”
