Canadians wanted a budget from Ottawa that is focused on their priorities and the needs of the middle class – not just the wealthiest few.

Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus says, after ten years of deficits and mismanagement, Canada’s middle class families are working harder but falling further behind.

“With a slowing economy and a dismal record on jobs, raiding the contingency fund and EI to pay for Conservatives’ billions in handouts to the wealthiest few is a risky bet that won’t grow the economy. Instead of measures to help more Canadians get ahead, Conservatives are taking Canada in the wrong direction and playing politics ahead of the election.”

The Budget does not mention North Ontario or FEDNOR, and provides nothing to get the Ring of Fire project moving forward.

Adding injury to insult, new infrastructure funds for transit are aimed at large cities leaving risks that Northern Ontario won’t get its share.

“The only new ideas to create jobs in this budget like the small-business tax cut came from NDP recommendations on how to improve the lives of Canadians. Conservatives have missed their chance to grow the economy and invest in stable full-time jobs.”

New Democrats question the Conservatives’ expensive Tax Free Savings Account (TFSA) changes while Conservatives continue to block progress to boost pension benefits and New Democrats will strongly oppose the unfair income-splitting scheme.

These measures do little for Canadian families who are left paying the billion dollar bill for big corporations and the wealthy few.

Tom Mulcair and the NDP are fighting for small business, to grow the economy while protecting our environment.

New Democrats will stand up for Canadian families because Canada’s economy isn’t strong without a strong and growing middle class.
