Charges laid in July 1 fire investigation

A Timmins man is facing charges following a house fire which occurred on July 1, 2017. At approximately 2 p.m., an individual attended a residence on Balsam Street South and allegedly set fire to items inside the residence. Information received by investigating officers indicated that there were individuals inside the residence at the time of the fire.

The fire was extinguished by the Timmins Fire Department and fortunately no injuries were sustained as a result. The damage to the residence as a result of the fire is estimated at approximately $30,000.

Following an investigation by members of the Timmins Police Service’s Criminal Investigation Section, Gerald Caza, 49, of Timmins faces charges of:

  • Break, enter and commit indictable offence
  • Arson: disregard for human life
  • Arson: damage to property
  • Theft under $5,000
  • Possession of property obtained by crime under $5,000
  • Breach of probation

Caza is currently in custody with a future court date of Nov. 14, 2017.
