Chapleau man wrongly accused of fail to stop for school bus

Man named in January 29 police release 'has no connection to the incident,' say police

CHAPLEAU - On Jan. 24, 2019 at approximately 3:35 p.m., members of the Superior East Detachment of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) received a complaint regarding a pickup truck that had driven by a school bus with its overhead red signal-lights flashing and the STOP arm extended, on Highway 129 in the town of Chapleau, Ont. 

The name, Joel Lemieux, released to the media on Jan. 29, 2019, as charged with fail to stop for school bus - owner, contrary to section 175(19) of the Highway Traffic Act (HTA) was inaccurate. Joel Lemieux was wrongly named and has no connection to this incident. 

On Feb. 1, 2019, officers received new information regarding this incident. As a result of this information, Adam Gauthier, an 18-year-old male from Chapleau, Ont., has been charged with the following:

  • Fail to stop for school bus - meeting, contrary to section 175(11) of the HTA.
