Former Sudbury reporter Callam Rodya will return to court Sept. 4.
Rodya is charged with possession of child pornography, accessing child pornography, making available child pornography and one count of posssession of a Schedule 1 substance (cocaine).
There is speculation from other news sources the matter could be resolved on Sept. 4, as the particular courtroom in which Rodya is to appear and at that time of day is usually reserved for pleas of guilt. However, that has not been confirmed.
It was expected a resolution was forthcoming in January this year, but that didn’t happen. In fact, on Jan. 7, as reporters were waiting to hear what was to happen next, they were surprised to learn the matter had been dealt with earlier in the day, when no media was present.
The case was adjourned to Jan. 15, then again to April 17. However, courts were closed in March due to COVID-19 and have only recently started to reopen for in-person appearances.
At the time of Rodya’s arrest in February 2019, Greater Sudbury Police said in October 2018, the Cyber Crime Unit identified a Greater Sudbury resident downloading child pornography using a file-sharing site between October 2018 and February 2019.
On Feb. 13, 2019, a search warrant was executed at a Greater Sudbury residence and officers found evidence of child pornography located on computers seized in the search. During the execution of the search warrant, detectives reported locating a small baggie containing what was suspected to be cocaine inside the residence.
Rodya was granted bail and is currently living in Guelph.
The accused was a reporter with CTV in Sudbury at the time of his arrest and is a former reporter at Sudbury.com.
