Boreal's heavy equipment program locally gets a boost

And it's a big one

At a press conference today, Collège Boréal received a generous donation from Goldcorp Porcupine Gold Mines which will significantly impact the college’s two heavy equipment programs in Timmins.

Goldcorp Porcupine Gold Mines donated a total of 15 pieces of used equipment valued at approximately $50,000. They included a Detroit diesel engine, a Minecat engine, two Yanmar UPC engines, two Cummins QSB 4.5 engines, a Minecat transmission, the front axle of a Miller truck, a 4-cylinder diesel engine, a mini excavator, and a Caterpillar IT28 loader.

Goldcorp Porcupine Gold Mines is a key partner for Collège Boréal. Over the years, the company has made several contributions to the Timmins campus, including a $30,000 donation last March for Boréal’s Culinary Arts and Culinary Management programs, as well as another equipment donation (23 pieces) in October 2015. Boréal awarded its 2016 President’s Award to Goldcorp Porcupine Gold Mines in recognition of the company’s ongoing commitment to the college and the Timmins community.

Boréal is the only Ontario college to offer the Motive Power Techniques – Heavy Equipment program as well as the Heavy Equipment Technician program in French. Through these programs, offered in Timmins and in Sudbury, students learn to repair and maintain diesel engines and various components for industrial, agricultural, forestry, and construction machinery. Upon graduation, students can pursue a career with construction or public works companies, as well as in the mining, agriculture, and forestry industries.

According to the Local Labour Market Forecast 2011-2031, a report published by the Far Northeast Training Board (FNETB), the impact of the upcoming retirement of the last wave of the baby boomer generation will have major impacts on the Northeastern Ontario labour market by 2031. In Timmins, the demand for qualified workers is expected to be the highest in Trades, Transport and Equipment Operators, and related fields following the retirement of 1,954 workers within the next twenty years.
