Blueberry picker's death consistent with bear attack, say OPP

RED LAKE, Ont. – Ontario Provincial Police say the death of a 67-year-old Red Lake, Ont. man is consistent with a bear attack.

Police, in a release issued on Tuesday, said 67-year-old Peter Franczak was out blueberry picking on Turzyk Road off Highway 105 on July 20.

When he didn’t return home as expected, police were called into investigate.

The victim’s body was found and a black bear located in the vicinity was killed by officers.

The cause of death was determined through a post-mortem examination.

Police remind the public to be aware of their surroundings and if a bear poses an immediate threat, phone 911 or the local police.
