Lou Battochio spent countless hours at the McIntyre Arena. Soon, a banner honouring his memory will hang at the facility.

Battochio died in November. Through the years, he was often affectionately referred to as the 'mayor of Schumacher' and he sat on council as the community's ward rep for 25 years.

At its Feb. 19 meeting, council approved a commemorative banner honouring his memory.

Schumacher Coun. Joe Campbell said it's a fitting tribute to Battochio.

“I don’t think anyone is going to match Mr. Battochio’s commitment to the community, to the city as a councillor all those years, to his commitment to Schumacher,” said Campbell.

The motion passed by council acknowledges that Battochio is "missed deeply throughout our whole community."

It notes that he was a passionate ambassador for the city and was a dedicated volunteer. With the Schumacher Minor Hockey Association, it says he served in various capacities and spent countless hours at the McIntyre Community Centre.
