Winter's on the way and to prepare the government is injecting cash into area snowmobile trails.

The Ontario Federation of Snowmobile Clubs is receiving $834,904 through the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC) to improve Northern Ontario Trails.

"This investment in snowmobile trail improvements is critical to providing a high quality of life for residents and will increase tourism, strengthening the local economy," said Greg Rickford, Minister of Northern Development, in a news release.

Gogama and Kirkland Lake trails will see improvements thanks to the cash.

The bridge is being replaced over Little Black River north of Kirkland Lake. In Gogama, 36 kilometres of the Top C trail is being rerouted.

The other projects are:

  • Repairs and maintenance to the Pickerel River Bridge in Pickerel River
  • Decommissioning of bridges 76.8 and 73.2 and installation of culverts in their place near Mattawa
  • Replace the existing bridge over Whitson River in Greater Sudbury with a new 28-foot steel bridge
