2018-08-15 Aquatic Centre Council Presentation
A look at the Perkins + Will update on the proposed aquatics centre. The presentation will be at Timmins council Tuesday, Aug. 16 at 6 p.m.

An update on the proposed aquatic centre for Timmins is coming to council this week.

A presentation on the multi-use recreation centre is on the agenda for Tuesday’s meeting.

The Perkins + Will report includes elements previously discussed such as an eight-lane competition pool, leisure pool and a family-friendly play zone. There is also a dryland section with multi-use and squash courts, and an indoor walking track.

The estimated price tag for the facility that would be built on the Archie Dillon Sportsplex site is $48 million. That includes $36 million for construction costs, as well as $11.9 million for soft costs.

Tempers flared at a public meeting in the winter held to allow users to provide input on the design elements and programming at the potential complex.

At that time, people opposed to it had questions about the ongoing cost for the facility and the overall need for it. Those ongoing costs are not included in tomorrow’s presentation.

At the public meeting, Timmins Mayor Steve Black said the project won’t go ahead without funding from upper levels of government.

Council meets at 6 p.m. in council chambers at city hall.
