IROQUOIS FALLS - Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus has written to the Department of Defense asking them to clarify their intentions for the future of the Air cadet glider program at Iroquois Falls.

The Arctic Watershed Gliding program has been teaching generations of young air cadets to fly since the 1970s. Last month it was announced that the equipment was being removed by the Department of National Defense. Angus is pushing the department to clarify their intentions.

The department has stated that the equipment is simply being removed for maintenance. However, Angus is concerned that the temporary suspension of service may become permanent.

"We had a similar program in Thunder Bay that was shut down permanently after the department announced its plans to remove equipment for maintenance. I want the department to clearly state their intention regarding the future of the glider program in the northeast."

Angus has been a strong supporter of the cadet program in the north and participated in glider training exercises. He says it would be a tragedy for the cadet program and northern youth if the program is not re-established.

"This program has done wonders for the cadet program in northeastern Ontario. It has been invaluable tool for inspiring young people of our region. We need a firm commitment that this program will be continuing."
