With winter on the way and fuel prices not getting cheaper, Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus is pushing to make home heating costs a little cheaper.

Angus is pushing the federal government to take GST off of home heating costs.

“Winter has hit hard across northern Canada. And people are struggling with the rising fuel prices. It is particularly hard in rural regions where people on fixed incomes often have to rely on oil or propane where prices have soared. The government can do something to help people this winter. Will they take the GST off home heating bills to help seniors and working-class families?" questioned Angus in Parliament.

While he supports the government's $5,000 promise to help low-income people transition to heat pumps, he said many people don't have the cash to pay for installation cost.

“The government is offering some money to transition to heat pumps and I appreciate this gesture but for people who can’t pay their bills now they have no way to pay for rest of the cost of installation," he said.
