BI-ATHLON FINALS GREAT FOR YOUNG LEADERS
OTTAWA – Timmins-James Bay MP Charlie Angus has written to Defense Minister Rob Nicholson asking him to reaffirm the government’s commitment to the National Bi-Athlon program for cadets. This popular initiative is the latest cadet program that may be affected by ongoing cuts to at the Department. The New Democrats have been leading the fight to keep the cadet program strong challenging the government on the decision to cut funding for uniforms and the attempt to end the popular glider program. Angus says rumours about the future of the Bi-Athlon make it necessary to have a clear commitment from the government.
In a letter to Minister Nicholson, Angus reminds the government of the importance of supporting the cadet program of Canada.
“The cadet program plays a huge role in creating leadership opportunities for Canadian youth. This government needs to make a clear commitment to the cadets.”
Every year thousands of cadets across Canada participate in Bi-Athlon try outs that combine physical exercise and discipline. The top candidates are then invited to a national gathering of cadets. This year’s gathering is taking place at Ski Martock, Nova Scotia.
Angus says it is a program worth fighting for. “The Bi-Athlon is an action packed event that encourages youth across Canada to aspire to be the best they can be. The government needs to understand the importance of supporting the many great programs being undertaken by Canada’s Cadet program.”
