Altercation leads to assaulting an officer charge

Officers with the OPP and Offender Transport Unit were involved in an altercation with a prisoner who became combative with officers. One officer had to be treated at a local hospital for minor injuries

KAPUSKASING - On March 11, 2019, members of the James Bay Detachments of the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) and members of the Offender Transport Unit (OTU) were involved in an altercation with a prisoner who became combative with officers.  

During the altercation the prisoner attempted to take an Officer's Conductive Energy Weapon (CEW) from him, causing it to deploy. One officer suffered minor injuries and was treated at a local hospital and released.  

Sebastian Therrrien, 27 years of age, from Kapuskasing, Ont., was charged with:   

  • Assault Peace Officer With a Weapon (five counts), contrary to section 270.01(1)(a) of the Criminal Code (CC),
  • Assault Peace Officer - Cause Bodily Harm, contrary to section 270.01(1)(b) of the CC,
  • Disarming a Peace Officer - contrary to section 270.1(1) of the CC, and
  • Uttering Threats - Cause Death or Bodily Harm (four counts), contrary to section 264.1(1)(a) of the CC.

The accused was remanded into custody and will appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Cochrane, Ont., on April 2, 2019.
