20 new COVID-19 cases, 33 recoveries reported today

Twenty new COVID-19 cases and 33 recoveries are being reported by the Porcupine Health Unit today. 

Seventeen of the new cases are in Timmins and three are in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls.

Thirteen people are the contacts of cases and the exposure of seven is under investigation, according to the health unit. 

To date, there have been 813 confirmed cases of the virus in the region. Of those, 619 are recovered and 26 people have died. There are 194 known active cases — 174 in Timmins, 17 in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, two in James and Hudson Bay, and one in the Hearst, Hornepayne area. 

So far, 36,207 people have received at least one dose of the vaccine, which is an increase of 1,161 from yesterday's report. There have been 37,549 doses of the vaccine administered. 

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne, as well as communities on the James Bay coast.

There is a provincial shutdown and stay-at-home order in effect. Premier Doug Ford announced the stay-at-home measures are being extended and will remain in place until at least June 2.
