The Prime Minister is once again showing his contempt for the work of parliamentarians
SUDBURY – The Conservative government’s decision to shut down Parliament will impact the lives of Canadians, says NDP MPs Glenn Thibeault (Sudbury) and Carol Hughes (Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing).
“Stephen Harper chose to padlock Parliament and is stopping MPs from doing their job,” said New Democrat Critic for Aboriginal Health, Carol Hughes. “Too many seniors are struggling just to get by and we should be in Parliament, working on solutions.”
“While municipal politicians in Northern Ontario are working hard to address the concerns of their constituents, the voices of their federal counterparts are being stifled by Harper’s prorogation tactic. Whether it’s rail safety, soaring gas prices, or insurmountable credit card and ATM costs, Sudburians are anxious to see the issues they care about addressed in Parliament immediately”, added Thibeault.
The prorogation will negatively impact Canadians:
- The prorogation means nearly 1,000 less questions will be asked by opposition members in the House of Commons;
- The legislative error in the budget implementation bill C-60, increasing credit union taxes from 11% to 28%, will not be amended quickly;
- The special committee on missing and murdered aboriginal women will cease its activities;
- Environmental studies on habitat conservation, the Great Lakes, groundwater surveillance near the oil sands and on the impact of climate change on northern fish populations will all be abandoned.
