10 additional COVID cases reported, outbreak declared

Ten additional COVID-19 cases and an outbreak have been declared by the Porcupine Health Unit. 

There have been a total of 34 new cases reported in the region so far today.

The outbreak is at the Timmins and District Hospital off-site hospital facility at St. Mary's Gardens. Two people are confirmed cases at the site. 

"The TADH off-site hospital facility has operated separately from St. Mary's Gardens since its commencement in February of this year. TADH patients do not share indoor common spaces or amenities with St. Mary's Gardens residents," reads the news release. 

For the new cases, eight are in Timmins and two are in the James and Hudson Bay region.

The exposure for eight cases is under investigation and two people are the contacts of a case. 

To date, there have been 856 confirmed cases of the virus in the region. As of yesterday, at least 619 are recovered and 26 people have died. 

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Matheson, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne, as well as communities on the James Bay coast.

There is a provincial shutdown and stay-at-home order in effect until at least June 2.
