One death and seven new COVID-19 cases are being reported by the Porcupine Health Unit today (Jan. 24).

Since the health unit's last report on Friday there have been 161 recoveries.

At Timmins and District Hospital, 24 patients are testing positive for the virus. That's up from 20 people on Friday. Of the patients testing positive, seven people were admitted to hospital for a COVID-related reason.

There are 47 patients who have been tested and are either waiting for their test results or who will be tested.

The health unit did not report where the COVID-related death was in the region. It's the fourth death so far this month.

For the new cases, two are in Timmins, one is in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, and four are in the Kapuskasing area and one is out of region.

To date, there have been 4,049 confirmed cases in the region. Of those, 3,274 are recovered and 35 people have died. There are 740 known active cases — 366 in Timmins, 104 in the area of Cochrane, Matheson, Iroquois Falls and Smooth Rock Falls, 83 in the Kapuskasking area, 106 in Hearst and Hornepayne, 79 in the James Bay area, and two out of region.

Due to changes in testing, case numbers are underestimated.
