The Canadian Institute of Mining, Metallurgy and Petroleum (CIM) said holding its 2021 convention and expo virtually will “expand its reach and keep delegates safe.”

Citing concerns about the COVID-19 pandemic, the national mining body announced on Nov. 24 that its annual event would take place May 3-6 online only.

“As safety is our first priority, we have elected to present the convention as a virtual conference,” said Dany Bélanger, CIM’s technical program chair, in a news release.

“Although we will not be together in a traditional manner, we are putting together a world-class virtual experience so our members will maximize the benefit by having access to all the technical content during and after the conference.”

Themed Resilient and Thriving -- Together in a Changing World, the conference will include keynote presentations, technical panels featuring best practices from throughout the industry, an expo showcasing leading-edge equipment and solutions, and networking opportunities.

The CIM will also hold a “newly tailored awards celebration” to recognize outstanding contributions in the industry.

An announcement about the conference platform will be made at a later date.
