A Timmins mine has found a new way to speak to the community.

For National Indigenous Peoples Day on June 21, Newmont Porcupine unveiled a haul truck that's been painted orange with the Every Child Matters message featured prominently. There are also Every Child Matters stickers on the side.

“We wanted to raise the awareness of the residential school system in Canada and show our support for the reconciliation process,” said Bryan Neeley, Newmont Porcupine manager of sustainability and external relations.

Newmont Porcupine has agreements with eight First Nations, said Neeley, adding four of those are for the Timmins site. He said it's important to recognize the relationship that the mine has with the communities.

This is the third truck detailed this year, with the others being for the United Way and Timmins.Care. Neeley expects another eight will be painted this year.

“It’s an initiative at the site. We were overhauling all of our haul trucks and we realized this is another platform where we can actually speak to the community and talk about the long history that we have supporting different organizations,” he said.

The large haul trucks are used on-site, but the public may be able to see it at one of the overpasses the trucks use on Vipond and Gold Mine roads.
