About Us

The Sports for Kids Timmins mandate is to focus on creating conditions that enable and support children and youth to participate in sports, recreation and physical activities. This includes, but is not restricted to, eliminating a range of barriers so children can engage in play, and thus receive all the benefits associated with constructive sport and recreation opportunities.

Sports for Kids Timmins believes that because sport, recreation and physical activity provide documented substantive social, educational and health benefits, they must be accessible to all kids, and that no child/youth should be denied the tremendous associated benefits.

Our Mission
Our mission is to help the youth of Timmins, between 4 and 18 years of age, overcome social and economic barriers which have prevented or limited their participation in sport, recreation and physical activity. We perform this task by  issuing direct financial subsidies/grants for registration fees and purchase of equipment. All funds raised will be used to assist in funding children from low income families to be able to participate in sporting activities.

Our Vision
Our community is one in which sport, recreation and physical activities are accessible to everyone; involvement is highly valued; sport achievement at all levels is celebrated; and no child/youth between 4 and 18 years of age that meets financial thresholds is denied the benefits and opportunities of participation in the activities and programs of his or her choice. Every young person who has a desire to participate is included.

Challenge
Children and youth between 4 and 18 years of age currently face challenges and barriers in organized sports and recreation programs such as;

  • The lack of facilities
  • The cutback of after school programs
  • The lure of multimedia
  • The rise of registration and equipment

As a direct result, childhood inactivity has increased.

Impact
The lack of physical activity directly effects health and personal development of children and youth. It also results in childhood obesity. In turn,  this impact spreads to families, our community and our country.

Our Objectives

  • Raising funds, gathering resources and building program partners.
  • Providing Sports for Kids Timmins with a strong sustainable organizational structure.
  • Partnering with corporate, charitable and community-based organizations and programs.
  • Identifying and alleviating social and economic barriers in order to positively impact a child/youth’s participation in sport, recreation and physical activities.
  • Being a strong voice and advocate for sport and recreation in our community.
  • Promoting the benefits of physical activity and healthy living.
  • Raising funds to sponsor child applicants to children from low income families.

In 2020 we met all our objectives. In 2020, we helped 119 children participate in more than 149 different sports activities totaling $38,017.95 which was down 65 applicants due to the pandemic and sports being cancelled. The dollar amounts being allocated to Timmins children reflect the significant need for low income children to receive assistance for sports activities within our community. Sports for Kids Timmins strives to make a difference in Timmins through the direct issuance of registration and equipment grants to modest and low-income families. Due to the pandemic, we reissued over 50 vouchers as sports cancelled so the child could have another sport.

We raised funds through the following endeavors: letter writing campaign to businesses, individuals, community partners and service clubs; and in memoriam donations.  Our funding was decreased by 50% due to COVID. We operated the office remotely during the pandemic doing applications by phone and email. Meetings were held virtually during the pandemic.
