The Porcupine Health Unit is reporting two new COVID-19 cases.

Both are related to the outbreak at Extendicare in Kapuskasing. The people are self-isolating, according to the health unit.

The outbreak at Extendicare in Kapuskasing was declared Jan. 7. Since then, 19 cases have now been identified as part of it. Only one of those cases is listed as resolved.

The health unit does not indicate if the new cases are staff or residents.

"Unfortunately, with the investigation still underway, there is no additional information we can share at this time," wrote PHU communications specialist Gary Schelling in an email yesterday.

According to the provincial summary of long-term care cases, there are 14 residents who are positive at the 61-bed facility and five staff who are confirmed cases.

So far, there have been 189 cases of the virus in the health unit region. Of those, 151 are recovered and nine people have died. There are 29 known active cases.

There are COVID-19 assessment centres in Timmins, Cochrane, Iroquois Falls, Kapuskasing, Smooth Rock Falls, Hearst, and Hornepayne.
